FLC Student Takes First Place at Coastal Bend Regional Science Fair!

Eight students from Fulton Learning Center competed virtually at the 33rd  Annual Coastal Bend Regional Science Fair (CBRSF) on April 23rd and 24th, 2021, at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.  The event was sponsored by Valero Energy and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Eleven counties from the Coastal Bend area were eligible to compete.  Twenty-five school districts and charter schools registered projects and over 200 students competed at this event in the elementary division.  Students could enter a project in one of two categories:   Life & Health Science or Physical & Engineering Science.

Karson's "Coolest Birdhouse" Project

FLC is proud to announce that one of our third graders took first place in the physical science division!!  Karson Skinner submitted a project entitled “Coolest Birdhouse”.   The problem he tested was “Which roof material on a birdhouse keeps the inside the coolest?”.    He built and tested three types of roofing materials on birdhouses:   shingles, wood, and styrofoam.   On average, the wood roof kept the inside of the birdhouse the coolest over five days of testing.  Karson summarized his results best by stating:  “The wood roof would be better to use in the summer because it kept the birdhouse the coolest.  The shingle roof would be best to use in the winter because it kept the birdhouse the warmest.”

Other students from FLC who competed at the CBRSF included third-grader Ella Buckley,  fourth-graders Diego Alvear, Ginger Carpenter, and Nahla Gandy;  fifth-graders Kinslee Burton, Riley Waggoner, and Aubree Morales.    We are so proud of all of the students and their families for working so hard to advance to such a high level of competition!  Great job FLC students for taking the initiative to do a project, being a leader by competing, and showing grace and composure by competing both locally and regionally.    All of these students will be treated with tickets to Fiesta Texas.

Students in 6th – 12th grade are able to advance to the prestigious Texas state science fair and also the INTEL national competition – the elementary division, unfortunately, does not advance to the state or national level.

The science fair program at FLC is sponsored by Science Lab Instructor, Martha McLeod.
