Mitchell Anderson awarded full scholarship to Vassar College

Please join us in congratulating Rockport Fulton High senior, Mitchell Anderson, who is the recipient of a QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship and will attend Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Questbridge is a college and scholarship application process that helps outstanding low-income high school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to the nation's most selective colleges. Questbridge's rigorous academic criteria and screening process require applicants to:

· Enroll in a school's the most challenging courses available (usually including Honors, AP, and/or IB level courses)

· Reside in the top 5-10% of the graduating class

· Earn composite SAT and PSAT scores > 1310

Questbridge also looks for evidence of strong writing ability, intellectual spark, and determination through essays and teacher/counselor recommendations.

Thanks to Mitchell's own body of work, wonderful ACISD teachers and focused support through the Office of College and Career, Vassar College awarded Mitchell a full scholarship, valued at over $300,000. Vassar College is ranked #11 in National Liberal Arts Colleges, rankings which are set according to the schools' performances across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence. Intellectual inquiry at Vassar is characterized by an unusual degree of flexibility. The college does not have a core curriculum and students can declare a major by concentrating in a department, an interdepartmental program, a multidisciplinary program, or an individually tailored field of study in the Independent Program. This intellectual freedom produces original thinkers and has shaped the very essence of Vassar's academic life since the end of the 19th century through today.

Mitchell will attend an immersion program over the summer --- also paid for by the school --- and begin his classwork in August. He is considering, among other things, majoring in computer science, a semester abroad and a possible joint master's program with Dartmouth College. This is a remarkable choice --- and not one without its challenges --- for a remarkable young man. We wish him all the best and look forward to hearing about his adventures when he comes back to visit us.
