Medication at School

All prescription and over-the-counter medication (non-prescription) will be administered by the school nurse or designee with the exception of inhalers and anaphylaxis medications, which may be self-administered* according to the board policy of RFISD.

All medication (prescription and over-the-counter medication) must be provided by the parent or legal guardian. All medication must be in the original container and prescription medication must show the patient’s (student’s) name, prescribing physician’s name, name, and address of the pharmacy, brand or generic drug name, the strength of the drug, manufacturer identification, date dispensed and instructions for use.

All medication will require a request form for dispensing. Medication request forms are available in the school health office or online at the Rockport-Fulton Independent School District website.

In accordance with state requirements, RFISD will not give any nonprescription medicine to a student, except if administered by the athletic trainer or provided by a parent with a completed medication form. Nonprescription medicine includes but is not limited to antibiotic ointment, antibiotic spray, or pain-killing medicine for cuts, scrapes, and blisters.  We can give the student a band-aide and/or a bag of ice.

“Self-administration” is defined as the student consuming or applying medication in the manner directed by the licensed healthcare provider without additional assistance or direction.

If the student has been prescribed asthma or anaphylaxis medication for use during the school day or school-related events, the student and the parents should discuss this with the school nurse and/or principal. A student with asthma or severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) may be permitted to possess and use prescribed asthma or anaphylaxis medication at school or school-related events only if he or she has a signed, written request by the physician or other licensed healthcare provider and the parent or legal guardian. The student must also demonstrate to his or her physician or other licensed healthcare provider and to the school nurse the ability to use the prescribed medication, including any device required to administer the medication.

If a student is diabetic, in accordance with a student’s individual health plan for the management of diabetes, a student with diabetes will be permitted to possess and use monitoring equipment, supplies, and medication while at school or at a school-related event. The student’s individual health plan will include a signed, written request by the physician or other licensed healthcare provider and the parent or legal guardian.
