RFHS Seniors Plan Futures in US Army

Four Rockport-Fulton High School students have recently enlisted in the US Army.  They will begin their military careers in August 2017.

Jacob Burcham, son of Charlotte Mansell and Lonnie Burcham, has enlisted to be an 11B Infantryman. Burcham has chosen this Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) because he “wants to protect people in need.”  He has enlisted in the Army for a three-year tour. Afterwards, Burcham would like to use his military benefits to attend college, perhaps to study architecture, and is considering re-enlisting, then as an officer. Burcham also plans to marry his fiancé in June before he departs for Basic Training on August 14, 2017 at Fort Benning, GA.

Magdiel Coronado, son of Marlen and Ricardo Coronado, has enlisted and plans to become an 11B with goals of becoming an Army Ranger.  When asked if he was worried about not making it through the rigorous training program, his response was, “Losing isn't an option for me.”  Coronado will leave Rockport on August 21, 2017 to attend Basic Training at Fort Benning, GA.  He plans to make the Army his career and wants to retire from the military after he serves his country for at least 20 years.  Coronado will be the first member of his family to join the armed forces and he gives credit to SSG Duane Sharp for “putting him on the right path.”

Madilyn Deneau, granddaughter of Linda Gleinser, departing for Fort Jackson, SC on August 14, 2017.  She plans to become a 68W Health Care Specialist and would like to join the Airborne division.  Currently, Deneau works as a certified nurse's assistant and has no desire to work in a hospital environment, but would like to treat her patients on accident site.  She shared that she feels comfortable in medical emergencies and knows the military will train her for all circumstances that she will encounter.  She is not opposed to using her education benefits for a formal college education, but believes that the training the Army will provide will suit her purposes.  Deneau credits SSG Sharp for “pushing her harder than she thought she could go and not giving up on her.”

Pete Zumwalt, son of Melissa Stevens and step-son of Melvin Mills, will attend his Basic Training at Fort Jackson, SC on August 14, 2017.  His has chosen to become a 42 A Human Resources Specialist.  He has signed a four-year tour with the Army. After his initial tour in the Army he hopes to attend Texas A&M Core Cadets and earn his degree in Chemistry.  His plan is to re-enlist as an officer and pursue training to become a pharmacist.  At this time, Zumwalt is considering making the Army his career in order to retire after he serves 20 years.  He then envisions practicing as a pharmacist in the private sector.  He credits SSG Sharp with helping him to “plan out his career path.”

Rockport-Fulton High School is extremely proud of these students and soon to be young Warriors as they dedicate their lives to the service and freedom of their country.
