POWERful Resources Available for RFHS Parents Starting Tuesday

On the first Tuesday of every month, Rockport Fulton High School parents now have an opportunity to learn about and practice using all the on-line resources that are available to students and their parents through the ACISD and RFHS web pages. Pirate POWER (Parents’ Online Web Education Resources) seminars will be held from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the RFHS Library Computer Lab starting on Tuesday, November 4. These classes will be conducted by Ann Vyoral, RFHS Library Media Specialist and Kim Lawing, ACISD Instructional Technology Coordinator.

Along with the ability to see their student’s grades, assignments, and teacher profiles using Skyward, parents can also use the schools powerful on-line database subscriptions like EBSCO, Encyclopedia Brittanica, Gale Groups, and Facts on File for research. These databases provide parents and students with 24/7 access to practice tests and on-line books on testing, reference books, current magazine, newspaper, and academic journal articles, and even forms for everything from college admissions to taxes. “These resources can be a great help for parents who are concerned with their child’s success in school and on standardized tests,” said Vyoral.

Pirate POWER seminars are the brainchild of RFHS Principal Tisha Piwetz, who was looking for ways to help parents who want to become more involved in their children’s high school education. “I think parents will be impressed with all of the resources that ACISD and RFHS have available on-line, and how easy it is to use them once you have a little training” stated Piwetz. She urges all parents and guardians to try to attend one of the POWER seminars this year. Besides November 4, Pirate POWER seminars will also be held on December 2, January 6, February 3, March 3, April 7, and May 5. For more information, contact the RFHS Library at 790-2220.
