ACISD teachers, Jessica Janota (8th Grade Social Studies, Rockport-Fulton Middle School) and Marth McLeod (5th Grade Science, Fulton 4-5 Learning Center) have been selected as finalists in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards for 2013. Janota was selected in the Rising Star category for teachers with less than 10 years of experience and McLeod was selected in the Lifetime Achievement category for teachers with more than 20 years of experience. Both teachers received a surprise visit from representatives from H-E-B on February 27th complete with cake, balloons, and the H-E-B mascot, Buddy. McLeod and Janota each received $1000 checks for themselves and $1000 grants for their school.
The Excellence in Education Awards Program was created by H-E-B in 2002 to support public education in Texas. Every year, customers, employees, and community members are asked to nominate an educator for recognition. Each nominee is then invited to complete an online application to compete for the regional and state awards. Five regional judging panels select 40 teacher and principal finalists. On May 3rd, the state winners will be announced and honored at a dinner in Austin. If selected for the State Rising Star Award, Janota will receive $5000 for herself and the Middle School will receive a $5000 grant. If selected for the State Lifetime Achievement Award, McLeod will receive $25,000 and the Fulton Learning Center will receive a grant for $25,000.
