Challenge Lab

Live Oak Learning Center is excited to have the Challenge Lab added to our campus this year. The Lab serves students in three ways: Study Groups, Lunch Bunch, and Open Lab.

Study Groups consist of GT and high achieving students. The students are working on year long projects that will be presented in a show case at the end of the year.  These projects require research, creativity, and critical thinking.

During Lunch Bunch, GT students eat in the lab. While the students eat, they have a short lesson.  The focus is on social skills and what it means to be GT. They also discuss problems GT students face and how they will solve those problems when they occur.

Open Lab is open to any student that meets an academic goal. Teachers send students to the lab to work on science, language arts, math, social studies, creativity, and logic.

At Live Oak Learning Center our curriculum is the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. To teach these TEKs our mathematics program is a conceptually-developed one. This means that the concepts in math are taught, such as: addition means joining two groups together, rather than addition is just 2+2=4. Our foundation resource is Math Investigations, which offers lots of manipulative activities which help teach math concepts. We also use Texas Mathematics as a resource, to help relate the math concepts to TEKs/TAKS format.
